LBG Kicking The Career Ladder Away for IP&I Workers

For an accessible version, please scroll past the images.

On the 4th July senior management in Insurance, Pensions & Investments (IP&I) announced that the business area would now be based in five core hub locations. This now means that there will be no backfill of IP&I roles in Newport or Poole, and all future vacancies within IP&I will be advertised in Edinburgh, West Yorkshire, Bristol, London and Dundee and no longer in South Wales.

This decision has effectively kicked the career ladder away for hard working IP&I workers in Wales who have been working towards promotion, personal career goals and has ultimately stifled aspiration. This announcement has come as a massive shock to workers in Tredegar Park, Newport which has been the centre of Home Insurance operations for over 30 years with an average worker tenure in role of around 10+ years and coupled with the recent closure announcement of the Newport office in 2026 adds yet another layer of uncertainty and anxiety for workers.

Here’s what impacted IP&I workers had to say:

"I’ve worked for Lloyds for many years.I have supported the business through mergers, redesign (which was a disaster), working remotely during covid and now the new bambi project and this is how I am treated, just a cog in a machine that can be replaced on a whim. I am a person, not an employee number."

"I have been in my development role for a long time and worked hard to progress and that was all for nothing. I seriously need to reconsider my career path outside of LBG. "

"If I want to progress in my chosen career path, I am expected to relocate to Leeds. I appreciate there are roles I can apply for within other divisions but I will be at a disadvantage against colleagues already in that area. "

Unite view & support

Unite have stressed that this decision will potentially have a negative impact on the career progression and aspiration of workers who are unable to relocate or travel to one of the new core hubs. The decision appears to be reliant on the assumption that there will be sufficient talent in the locality of the core hubs and it risks alienating workers with many years’ worth of accumulated skill and knowledge. Worker concerns about their future career aspirations within LBG need to be addressed with pace. With the ongoing cost of living crisis, worrying about job security will have a massive impact on worker morale.

Unite the Union understand that change is a part of life, but workers affected by this change need to be supported and their future career aspirations concerns addressed - no ifs, no buts. We call on LBG to invest in facilitating career progression sessions, placements and awareness days and proactively facilitate sideways moves to other areas of the business. As well as afford all impacted workers with additional development and shadowing time to enable workers to explore and develop into roles outside of IP&I.

Unite also propose to collaborate with LBG to arrange a number of job fairs, acknowledging that career fairs are now being set up which is a positive step, with various business areas to enable impacted workers to consider their future with LBG and explore options. Unite members can also take advantage of the Welsh Union Learning Fund, additional info overleaf, for help and support with the cost of training courses and in gaining qualifications in whatever career path they are interested in. We know this change is not welcomed but we are here to help you achieve your career aspirations and to protect jobs and we will be arranging Unite learning stalls soon at the Newport site to help you decide your next steps.
